Edward Berbon, serving a 22-year prison sentence, remains at large, Mount Laurel police said.

Berbon, 54, was scheduled for release on Feb. 12, 2024 — his mandatory minimum sentence.

He was a resident at a halfway house in Camden County when he disappeared from the work detail in Mount Laurel, police were told by New Jersey Department of Corrections officials on Tuesday, Sept. 26.

Berbon previously served time for theft and robbery, according to NJDOC.

"We have no information that Mr. Berbon poses any threat to the public. Mr. Berbon does NOT reside in Mount Laurel, the Mount Laurel Police Department has not had any contact with Mr. Berbon since he has been working here, and we have no information to indicate that he is currently in Mount Laurel," Mount Laurel police said on Facebook.

"On or about Saturday, Sept. 23, Berbon failed to return to a halfway house where he lives in a residential setting," police said.  "By failing to return to the halfway house after work, Berbon is now considered an escapee."

Berbon was in custody for attempted murder since 2005 and was scheduled to be released on Feb. 12, 2024.

Shortly after being released from prison in July 2004, Berbon went to his parents’ home in Hamilton Township, Mercer County and attacked them, according to news accounts.

He slashed his father’s throat and left him critically injured with multiple stab wounds to his back and chest, authorities said at the time. He also partially severed one of his mother’s fingers, authorities said. Both parents survived the attack.

Berbon is described as approximately 6’ tall and weighing 250 pounds with blue eyes and brown/gray hair.

The Mount Laurel Police Department is asking the public to contact the NJDOC Special Investigation Unit – Fugitive Unit at 1-800-523-3829 with any relevant information.

Dial 9-1-1 if you see Berbon in person.

Officials have not said what the work detail entailed or how Berbon managed to get away.
